Albireo is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on the development and potential commercialization of novel bile acid modulators to treat orphan pediatric liver diseases, and other liver or gastrointestinal diseases and disorders. We have deep expertise in bile acid biology, and a pipeline of clinical and preclinical programs. Our parent company, Albireo Pharma, Inc., is located in Boston, Massachusetts, and our key operating subsidiary, Albireo AB, is located in Gothenburg, Sweden. We were spun out from AstraZeneca in 2008. The Boston Business Journal named Albireo one of the 2019 Best Places to Work in Massachusetts.

This is an exciting and pivotal time at Albireo. Our lead product candidate is in a Phase 3 clinical trial for a rare, life-threatening pediatric liver disease with no approved pharmacologic treatment option. We expect topline results in mid-2020. Meanwhile, we are advancing our pipeline in other disease indications. We have a licensing agreement in Japan that already has generated revenues, an excellent financial position for a pre-launch company and a small team of great people. We know personally many of the people we’re working to help, and they motivate us every day.

We have a unique opportunity for a high-performing marketing professional to lead our first commercial launch. As Albireo’s Director of Marketing, you will have broad leadership responsibility across marketing in the U.S. and EU. This role will report to the Vice President of Marketing, Advocacy and Patient Support, and is based in Boston, MA.

Job Description

Primary responsibilities (may vary):

  • Lead global brand strategy and tactical plan, assimilating input from across functions and regions.
  • Execute account mapping.
  • Develop promotional platform, including brand messaging and creative campaign.
  • Plan and implement, with marketing teammates and external partners, a full range of marketing programs and materials that drive the brand strategy in the U.S. and EU.
  • Collaborate with Medical Affairs and external partner to lead and execute physician engagement plan, including KOL database, Global Steering Committee and speaker training.
  • Collaborate with Medical Affairs to plan and execute Albireo’s presence at key medical congresses.
  • Design and implement patient identification activities.
  • Lead collaboration with external partners.
  • Build and track marketing budget.
  • Ensure adherence to all legal and regulatory requirements in our marketing practices. 


  • Minimum 7 years of biopharma marketing experience
  • Product launch experience
  • Strong strategic thinking, including the ability to identify key market insights, establish a clear strategic framework and orchestrate brand planning
  • Wide-ranging tactical experience and demonstrated ability to reach target audiences with impact
  • Physician and patient marketing experience
  • U.S. and global marketing experience
  • Excellent project management ability
  • High attention to detail, diligence and reliability
  • High empathy and strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to simplify issues and reconcile different points of view
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with a diverse team
  • Partner management experience
  • Ability to work quickly and flexibly with resource constraints
  • High integrity and commitment to working within full legal/regulatory compliance
  • Strong writing and editing ability
  • High level of ability in Word, PowerPoint and Excel
  • Ability to travel in the U.S. and globally (up to about 25% travel)
  • Desire to be part of a small, dynamic, mission-driven company
  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Experience in a small, pre-launch company
  • Experience building and managing CRM systems
  • Experience conducting market research and competitive intelligence
  • Advanced degree in a relevant discipline
